Fishermen Discovers Something On A Lone Iceberg And Scientists Are In Disbelief
Life at sea can be challenging. If you don’t believe us, then just ask the fishermen who work hard every day and risk their lives just to get a fresh catch of fish. Theirs is considered one of the most dangerous professions in the world.
There’s no telling what will happen or what they’ll come across with every single day. These three fishermen sure weren’t expecting to encounter something unusual during one of their fishing trips out in the sea.
A Love for Fishing
Mallory Harrigan, Cliff Russell, and Allan Russell shared a common love for fishing, which explains why the three of them decided to turn it into their full-time profession. When they were all decided, they bought a fishing boat to start their own commercial fishing business.
Their fishing business was booming since Canadian waters were abundant with so much fish and other seafood. Then again, they risk their lives each day just to earn some money. And while some days they catch plenty of fish, other days they go home with nothing.
But before the three became business partners, they started out as friends. Like any good friend, they would help each other out whenever they have problems. Starting their own business meant their friendship will get tested, but luckily for them, their bond remained intact.
Money was never an issue for them. They were just thankful to get home safely each day whether they get a good haul or not. Truly, Cliff, Mallory, and Allan’s friendship was able to surpass the test of time.
That Fateful Day
As usual, the three friends set out at sea hoping to get a good catch. One morning, they prepared all the things they would need to catch fish. They made all the necessary preparations and they felt like that day would be a good day.
Little did they know that what they’re feeling is right. On that morning, Mallory arrived earlier than usual. Cliff and Allan arrived shortly after and the three started their journey off to sea to begin with their day’s work.
The Calm Before the Storm
For fishermen, prepping the boat is the easiest part of their day. The three friends would spend this time talking to each other and sharing a good laugh. The good thing about them though is that they never got tired of each other’s presence despite seeing each other practically every day.
As their day went by, things got a bit more difficult as their real work was about to begin. The sea was peaceful, but they knew that this won’t last for long.
Dropping Their Lines
Since they’ve had a lot of experience when it comes to fishing, they knew exactly where to find the most fish off the Canadian coast. Once they arrived at their destination, they turned off the engine of their boat and prepared to drop their lines.
For that particular day, they hoped to catch loads of crabs since crab season was almost ending. It was only natural for the three of them to get their hopes up since that year has been their most successful one ever since they started their fishing business.
The First Catch
Since fishing proved to be such a grueling task, the three of them needed to have teamwork to be able to make it through the day. After dropping the cages into the water, one of them had to steer the boat and the other two would need to make sure that the fishing lines don’t tangle.
It seems easy but when you’re the one doing these tasks, it can be very challenging. As they expected, their cages were filled with more than enough crabs they had hoped for. Usually, when you hit the jackpot during the first catch, you can expect the same results throughout the rest of the day.
The three of them rejoiced when they almost filled their boat with freshly caught crabs. Hoping to stretch their luck further, they decided to move to a different location to catch more crabs and break their own record. They turned the boat and headed off to a colder part of the ocean where crabs are also abundant.
The farther they traveled, the colder it got, and they had to avoid icebergs coming from different directions. Along the way, they saw different arctic animals such as colonies of seals.
Although the sight of the Canadian Coast was spectacular, it also posed a threat to the three of them. At any given time, they could crash onto an iceberg if they’re not careful enough. They had to tread the waters carefully since huge icebergs floated freely out on the sea.
As Allan did his best to keep an eye out for any stray icebergs, something unexpected suddenly caught his attention. Just to be sure, he asked his companions if they could make out what he saw, but none of them knew what it was.
However, Mallory suggested that it might be a seal out for a quick sunbathing. Cliff agreed especially since they’ve been seeing a lot of seal colonies along their way. Then again, Allan felt it was more than just a seal.
He found it quite unusual that it would be spending some time alone with lots of marine predators on the loose. His gut feeling told him that what they saw was an animal in need of their help. Something about the way the animal just didn’t sit well with him.
A Closer Look
Because of his gut feeling, the three of them decided to take a closer look at what that mystery animal was. At first, they tried to peak through their binoculars before sailing their both near the iceberg. Even though they were behind their fishing schedule, they still went out of their way to find out what it was they saw.
Since the binoculars still didn’t give them a clear picture of the animal they saw, they decided to get closer. If it wasn’t for the wind, they wouldn’t see that the animal on the iceberg had a thick coat of fur.
Investigating the Situation
But what truly bothered them the most was the fact that the animal’s fur appeared to be soaking wet. If it wasn’t an animal accustomed to freezing temperatures, then it most likely wouldn’t survive. As their boat got closer, they approached the animal with caution.
Naturally, they would be careful with each step they took since they really didn’t know what they were dealing with. But Allan knew that they were doing the right thing no matter how dangerous their situation was.
A Steady Approach
To avoid startling the animal, they slowly drove the boat closer to the giant iceberg. They were careful enough to not make any loud sounds while they investigated.
While Allan was manning the steering wheel, Mallory and Cliff were watching over the sides of the boat to check whether there are any icebergs about to crash on them. Suddenly, the waves were starting to grow bigger which made the boat move more. It was a nerve-wracking experience for the three, but they knew it was too late for them to turn back now.
As they had anticipated, the waves got stronger and stronger by the second. This made it difficult for them to navigate through the sea and reach the animal on time. Their fear was that the iceberg it was on might collapse any moment, so time was of the essence in saving the poor creature.
Even worse was that the animal might think of jumping off due to the violent swaying motion of the iceberg it was resting on. Should something like that happen, it would be too late for the trio to save it.
Chasing the Iceberg
Due to the violent movement of the waves, their boat started unintentionally moving further and further away from the iceberg. At first, the three of them thought they might not be able to catch up with the creature stuck on the iceberg, but they still tried their best to chase the iceberg as it drifted away from them.
They knew that at this point, they had to move faster if they wanted to save this unknown animal. To add to their worries, it was almost night time, and they had to get back to shore before it goes dark.
Saving the Creature
Finally, they were able to catch up with the iceberg and drifted close enough to see what kind of animal they saw. Although they were trying their best to make out what the mystery animal was, the first thing they noticed was that it had four legs, similar to that of a dog’s.
Then again they thought that it’s impossible for a house pet to reach the sea, let alone an iceberg. They also noticed that the animal was shivering uncontrollably, confirming their hunch that it was soaking wet.
The Animal Identified
They then realized that they would gladly risk their lives just to save the innocent animal. Finally, they got as near as they could to the iceberg and saw that the stranded animal was an Arctic Fox. Their instinct told them that they had to whatever it takes to save the tiny fox.
It was growing weaker by the minute, and birds were starting to fly above it as they anticipate its demise. Seeing the heartbreaking situation the fox was in, the three of them sprung into action to save its life.
Coming Up With A Plan
Like the way they worked together during their fishing trips, the three friends now had to put their heads together to think of an effective way to get to the fox on time. They had to think of a lot of things such as gaining the animal’s trust and making it back to the boat in one piece.
There’s always a small chance that whatever plan they were hatching up might work against them, so they had to be extra careful in putting their plan into action.
A Solid Plan
Instead of going full superhero and climbing onto the iceberg, Cliff, Mallory, and Allan thought of a way to lure the fox to their boat. They tried speaking softly and reaching out their arms hoping that the fox would go near them.
Unfortunately, they ended up scaring the fox, so it ran away in the opposite direction. Seeing as it had nowhere else to go but down, they changed their strategy to prevent the fox from jumping into the ocean.
The three friends refused to leave the fox alone even though it appeared as though it didn’t want to be rescued. They decide to wait for the fox to finally come to its senses and approach them. But as we mentioned, they didn’t really have much time, but it didn’t matter for them anymore.
As the day was coming to an end, the fox suddenly stood up and stepped toward the boat. Only time would tell whether it would jump aboard or not.
Animal On Board
Finally, the fox got as close as it could get to the fishing boat. Despite this, it was still too far to reach, especially since it was now too weak to make any sudden movement. The fox then looked at Allan as if it were asking him to reach out and place him gently on the deck.
Allan got its message and he gently pulled the fox off the iceberg and into their boat. Even though the fox was already safe on their boat, there was still no telling whether it would survive or not.
An Escape Attempt
Cliff and Allan acted quickly and grabbed towels to dry off the fox’s fur. The two were concerned that the wild creature might attack if they suddenly make a wrong move, but none of them even thought about the possibility that the fox might jump out of their ship, which was exactly what happened.
Out of fear, the fox jumped out of the boat leaving Allan, Cliff, and Mallory stunned. They couldn’t believe they were back to square one! But then they followed where the animal was going until it got tired.
When the fox finally got tired of trying to escape, Allan pulled him back into the boat again. This time, they made sure he won’t be able to escape. Mallory was the one assigned to steer the vessel back to shore while Allan and Cliff were the ones watching over the fox.
They noticed that the animal was still shivering despite their best efforts to dry him off. They immediately looked for a way to warm the fox’s body and prevent it from going into shock.
While Mallory was busy navigating their ship, she suggested her friends make a warm bed for the fox. While Cliff and Allan were searching for something to warm him up, they found a bunch of sawdust on their boat.
As they were gathering the sawdust to create the fox’s temporary bed, they also found a plastic bin where the animal could rest. They stuffed the bin with the sawdust and placed it in an area directly hit by sunlight to warm up the fox’s body.
A Comfy Bed
Since Allan was the one who pulled the fox into safety, he thought it best to be the person to interact with the fox until they get it to safety. He gently placed the fox into the makeshift sawdust bed where it fell fast asleep.
The trio breathed a little easier from that moment on and they focused on getting back to shore as quickly as possible so that they could give the animal the medical attention that it needed.
Calming Down the Fox
Cliff took over the steering wheel as they approached near the shore. They were about 30 minutes away from land when suddenly, he hit a wave which caused the boat to move suddenly. This woke up the sleeping fox.
As it got the chance to rest, the fox might have suddenly realized that it was among unknown beings and had a terrified look on its face. Fearing that it might attack them or try to escape again, Mallory thought of feeding the fox to try and calm it down.
Mallory knew that the fox could get back its strength by eating food. Now that its fur has already dried up and was wide awake, she tried to offer it some fresh seafood to eat. Unfortunately, the fox didn’t seem to like to eat it after sniffing the food that Mallory offered.
Since foxes are carnivorous animals, Mallory tried to offer some canned Vienna sausage to the hungry animal. After sniffing the food Mallory handed over, the fox finally gobbled it down.
Time To Dock
Once it had been fed, the fox went back to sleep. Shortly after, their boat reached the shore where they were finally able to dock. The noise that the boat made woke up the fox.
As usual, Mallory was there to prevent the creature from panicking. Even though she knew that the fox won’t be able to understand a word she says, she still tried her best to speak to it as softly as possible to soothe the wild animal.
Coming Back To Shore
Mallory did whatever it took to keep the fox calm as possible while Cliff finished docking the boat. Once they were back on dry land, they immediately thought of what they were supposed to do with the fox they saved.
Aside from giving it some medical attention, the three friends discussed what else animals need aside from food. After that, the trio came up with the idea of giving the fox a temporary home to keep it safe and warm.
Looking For A Home
It was up to them to keep the animal safe. Although the fox was already dried off, warmed up, and fed, it still needed a place to stay where it could live as safe as possible.
Being the fox’s caretaker through their journey home, Mallory suddenly remembered an area near the docks that would be the perfect spot to release the fox back into the wild. Mallory thought this was the best place to release the fox since that area posed no imminent threat to the creature.
A Makeshift House
Finally, the three of them reached the spot Mallory was talking about. They were overjoyed when they saw that the area was not only safe for the fox to roam around, but it also had a makeshift dog house where the animal could stay.
The best part was it was only 10 minutes away from the dock so they could check back on it again. The area was also very remote where nothing could hunt down the animal while it was on its way to full recovery.
A Successful Rescue
Allan, Cliff, and Mallory set out to find the fox’s new home. Although it took them quite some time, they were eventually able to find a decent place for the animal. Seeing as how the fox was getting better, they decided to set it free.
In order to do that, they placed the plastic bin where they kept the animal near the makeshift home they found. Of course, they had to wait around to see if the fox would make it to safety. After a while, the arctic fox stepped out of the bin and walked to the house. It was a long and tiring day but Allan, Cliff, and Mallory were happy that they were able to save an innocent life.
Indeed, saving animals is a noble act. While some find it easy to ignore an animal’s cry for help, there are people who are willing to go out of their way just to attend to creatures that are in need.
It’s a good thing that these kinds of people, who would rather sacrifice their safety than leave a helpless animal, are growing in number. These three Estonian construction workers are the perfect example of individuals who would literally risk their lives for any kind of animal.
An Exciting Day At Work
Rando Kartsepp, Robin Sillamäe, and Erki Väli were three construction workers who worked at the construction site of the Sindi dam in Estonia. Like any other day, they went to work and did their tasks. These three men worked closely together and most likely shared a few laughs each day.
Their task was to perform repairs on the Sindi dam. It was a relatively normal day for them, but none of them knew about what was going to happen next. The three were working happily until something caught their attention.
An Unusual Sound
As they were performing their routine tasks, they suddenly heard an unusual sound that caught them off guard. The sound came from somewhere, but they didn’t exactly know which direction it was coming from.
Mystified by what they heard, their curiosity got the better of them and they followed where the sound was. As they walked, the strange sound led them towards the Pärnu river, where they saw something moving in the water, about 100 meters away from where they were standing.
A Dog In Need
As they looked closer, they saw what appeared to be an animal splashing frantically in the water. A few moments passed when they suddenly realized that the animal they saw drowning before their eyes was a big dog.
They immediately figured out that the canine was in danger since the water was freezing during that time of the year. The ice was definitely lowering the poor pooches body temperature so much that it was unable to swim into safety. Seeing this scenario, they decide to act quickly.
Three Men to the Rescue
The three construction workers did not waste any minute longer. They quickly sprung into action to try and save the drowning canine. Even though the water’s temperature was below freezing point, they still rushed into the river and swam towards where the dog was.
The three of them had a difficult time swimming towards the dog due to the thick build-up of ice, but with enough teamwork, they eventually managed to carve a clear path to reach the poor animal.
Getting A Closer Look
Once they were able to pull the dog into safety, they grabbed a warm blanket to wrap him up and dry him off. As they were doing so, they inspected the dog for any other injuries. Although the dog didn’t have any serious injuries, they did notice how incredibly large it was and how thick its fur is.
They were especially amazed by the dog’s piercing yellow eyes. However, they knew there were more important matters they need to be taking care of, such as giving the dog immediate medical attention.
No Time To Waste
As much as they would love to sit around and admire the beauty of the dog they just saved, they knew that it had to be taken immediately to the nearest veterinarian. Since they didn’t expect the dog to be as big as it is, the blanket they prepared to warm him up wasn’t doing much help.
They knew that only a trained professional would be able to save the dog’s life and prevent it from going into shock due to hypothermia.
Getting Proper Medical Care
At once, they carried the freezing animal onto their pickup truck and searched for the nearest veterinary clinic. When they were able to locate the clinic, they immediately called to inform them about the emergency.
The staff from the clinic told them to bring the dog to them immediately. The three men drove as fast as they could since they feared for the dog’s life. On the way to the animal hospital though, the tired dog slept on Kartsepp's lap.
A Major Setback
Once they arrived at the animal clinic, they found the veterinarians already waiting for them. They carried the dog inside and immediately attended to the freezing canine. As per protocol, the doctors and the staff assessed the general state of the animal.
They first tried to check for any signs of physical injuries and of course, they also attempted to identify what kind of dog they were dealing with. Upon checking the animal though, they suddenly realized that they weren’t really dealing with a dog.
At that point, the veterinarians were stumped as to what kind of dog the three men brought into the clinic. As a last resort, the animal doctors enlisted the help of a local hunter whom they thought would be able to help them out in determining the species of their canine patient.
Surprisingly, the hunter was able to confirm the hunch of the animal experts. According to him, the dog in their clinic wasn’t actually a dog but was a wild wolf.
A Case of Mistaken Identity
The three construction workers were stunned. They couldn’t believe that they took care of and transported a dangerous predator in their pickup truck. Everyone in the room thought how extremely lucky the three men were that the wolf was weak enough to not pay any attention to them.
Since this animal wasn’t accustomed to the presence of humans, it could have easily turned on them and made a quick snack out of the three of them. They were lucky to even make it to the clinic in one piece.
A Moment Of Calmness
All the while, the three men thought that they were dealing with a gentle giant due to the fact that it was very calm when they were tending to it. As if it were a large breed canine, the good samaritans still couldn’t believe that they dried off the soaking animal just like they would a normal dog.
Once they found out that they took a wolf into the clinic, they started thinking of the worst thing that could happen to all of them.
Only A Matter Of Time
Since the wolf was too weak to even move due to the exhaustion of paddling in the freezing river, it managed to stay calm for many hours. However, they knew for a fact that this state of calmness wouldn’t last for long once the wolf regains its strength.
Tarvo Markson, the head veterinarian even said "At first, he was so done in for he didn’t resist at all. We simply kept him in this room, but once he started to get an idea of the situation, I felt things might quickly take a turn for the dangerous."
Now that they all knew what they were dealing with, they took all the safety precautions they needed to keep themselves away from harm. True enough, when the wolf started to regain consciousness, it acted as it would in the wilderness.
The wolf, which they estimated to be a year old, began to become more aggressive since it was confined in the walls of the small clinic. Because of this, the animal hospital’s staff placed the creature inside a cage.
By the end of the day, the dog was able to fully recover from the event which occurred earlier. Once the clinic’s staff and the animal doctors were sure that the wolf was already safe from harm, they decided it would be best for it to be released back into its natural habitat.
After all, the wolf didn’t sustain any alarming injuries. All it really needed was constant monitoring and enough warmth to be able to get back on its feet.
Keeping A Close Watch
Still, they wanted to make sure that the wolf will be safe from any more harm. Estonia's national environmental agency followed its protocols. According to them, when a wild animal is rescued, a GPS tracker needs to be attached to them to keep track of their progress.
This would also allow them to understand better how these creatures behave and how their condition would improve once they’re set free into the wilderness. While some clinics would inject animals with a microscopic GPS tracker, they instead attached a GPS collar on the wolf for easier identification.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Things went as planned and the wolf was already released into its natural habitat. Immediately, the wild animal took off and found its way back home. Although the three men only spent a few hours with the wild animal, they still felt a bit of sadness when they set it free.
Kartsepp and his friends bid the wolf goodbye. None of them even realized that that particular day would be their most unforgettable experience at work. It was a bittersweet moment, but it was a necessary step to ensure the wolf’s survival.
Doing Just Fine
Although this was a unique experience, something like this event could happen again. As it turns out, Estonia is home to a large population of wolves. After what happened, the three men went on with their lives, as usual.
But a stroke of luck made the wolf cross paths with the three men once again. The same wolf they have taken care of was spotted again over 70 miles from where it had been released. By the looks of it, the wolf seemed to be doing well.
